A 7-year-old Vermont student and his mother were detained by immigration agents at the U.S.–Canada border after officers discovered she possessed a "fraudulent" green card, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

CBP said the mother, her son, and an adult male companion were refused entry into Canada and returned to the United States, where officers at the Highgate Springs Port of Entry discovered fraudulent documents belonging to the mother, including a green card and a Social Security card on November 27, 2025.

"The mother was subsequently transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement , Enforcement and Removal Operations for detention pending her immigration proceedings," a spokesperson for the agency told Newsweek . "Her son remained with her throughout the
