During his two-decade career at the University of Pittsburgh, professor Scott Morgenstern grew accustomed to his free access to the Bellfield Hall fitness facility.

The political science professor worked out in the facility, used its showers after biking to campus, and stored his workout clothes and toiletries in a dedicated locker. He’d even occasionally play a game of pick-up basketball with his students in the gym.

But all of that has come to an end since the closure of that facility, and subsequent opening of Pitt’s new Recreation & Wellness Center.

Though students have free access to the state-of-the-art Rec Center, university employees must pay a monthly membership fee to use it.

Now, if Mr. Morgenstern wants access to a campus gym, it will cost him $45 a month.
