Tower Hamlets Council risks being stuck in a “cycle” of government intervention without “urgent and sustatined action”, an auditor has warned.

External auditors EY have found several “significant weaknesses” in how the council is run . It comes as the council is under “statutory intervention”, overseen by government envoys seeking improvements.

Speaking to councillors on Wednesday EY partner Stephen Reid said many of the issues had persisted for “many years” and needed “urgent action”.

He said: “Many of the weaknesses which we have reported here in the report are not new. They are long-standing issues that have persisted, some of which over many years.
