Coventry welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender to the city as part of a poignant ceremony. The visit is the first time in almost three decades a German leader has been to UK.

Mr Steinmeier and Ms Budenbender toured the new cathedral, which was completed in 1962, and joined a prayer service highlighting the ministry’s commitment to peace and reconciliation.

In a symbolic ceremony a German wreath was laid by the couple at the Cathedral Ruins, which was famously destroyed during an air raid 85 years ago. The Duke of Kent was also in attendance.

More than 500 people were killed and thousands of homes destroyed when Germany bombed the city during the Blitz of 14 November 1940.
