DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The LUCAS 3, a medical device that automatically performs chest compressions for up to 45 minutes, is now available to deputies in rural St. Louis County.

Ely and Cook deputies will now have the LUCAS, or the Lund University Cardiac Assist System , to use during medical emergencies in remote areas.

The device was donated to St. Louis County by the University of Minnesota and the LUCAS Helmsley Project grant. It is one of around 50 devices distributed to law enforcement across the state.

In the two months of the pilot program, the device has already saved two lives.

During times of medical emergency, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said deputies are often the first to administer life-saving care.
