As the U.S. prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will bring millions of fans to North America, leaders in one Alabama city are also eying a potential opportunity to turn some of that international spotlight their way.

While Montgomery is not on the list of big city hosts for the World Cup, the Capital City is launching a campaign to become a team base camp for international players. Landing such a role would bring players and observers to the city.

“Montgomery has long been a gateway for global visitors,” Mayor Steven Reed said in a statement. “Our world-class infrastructure, rich history, and unwavering hospitality make us an ideal home base for international athletes preparing to compete on the world’s biggest stage.”
