The holiday shopping season is in full swing, but some people are participating in December Blackouts and other boycotts. Grassroot groups have led economic protests throughout 2025. This month, there are multiple pushes to encourage people to shop locally and keep money in their community.
"'Holiday spirit' has been weaponized into pressure, guilt, and overspending . Families go into debt to fulfill expectations created by companies that do not care about their lives, their wages, or their future," the People's Union USA wrote.
Multiple major brands and retailers have been the focus of boycotts that have ranged from seven days to a month or more. Some companies, like Target, Walmart and Amazon, have been repeatedly highlighted.
