(KRON) -- A Santa Cruz County mother who abandoned her newborn son 31 years ago before he died alone was convicted of manslaughter this week, prosecutors said.

Pamela Ferreyra, 61, of Watsonville, pleaded guilty for the death of Baby John Doe, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni announced Thursday.

On December 3, 1994, the remains of a two-to-three-day-old boy were discovered near Garin Road in Prunedale, a rural town in Monterey County. "An autopsy confirmed that the child was born alive, outside of a hospital setting, and that he had not been fed for approximately 24 hours prior to his death," prosecutors wrote.

No missing person’s report was ever filed, and the identity of Baby John Doe's parents remained a mystery for decades, prosecutors said.
