Detectives are turning back to the community — and releasing new video — in hopes of finally solving the 2021 killing of Tafari “Trey” Nadhim, a Maryland man found dead in a Hybla Valley neighborhood, Fairfax County Police said.
The case dates back to Thursday, July 8, 2021, when officers were called to the 7800 block of Janna Lee Avenue in Hybla Valley for a death investigation, according to detectives with the Major Crimes Bureau.
Police said man, later identified as Nadhim, 30, was found unresponsive in a wooded area.
Investigators learned Nadhim had been at a Fourth of July block party in a nearby neighborhood.
Detectives said that between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on July 5, he was involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a shooting.
As part of the investigation, detectives pulled surveillance video that shows a man walking behind a row of apartments with a firearm, followed by two men and a woman.
The footage has now been shared again in hopes that someone will recognize the people in it. The video released by detectives can be viewed here.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the case a homicide on July 9, 2021, after determining Nadhim suffered trauma to the upper body. Detectives believe he had been dead in the wooded area for several days before he was found.
Investigators are asking anyone who attended the block party, recognizes the people in the video, or has information about the shooting to come forward and help bring closure in the case.
Tipsters can contact detectives at the Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2.
