MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ( WWSB ) - The U.S. Coast Guard seized a fishing vessel earlier this week loaded with more than 3,700 pounds of cocaine off Miami Beach, authorities said.
The cache, worth an estimated $28 million, was the largest seizure by a Coast Guard station since 1995, according to Lt. Matthew Ross, Coast Guard Station Miami Beach’s commanding officer.
A law enforcement boat crew along with Customs and Border Patrol air and marine operations, along with Homeland Security investigators, grabbed the drug-smuggling vessel two miles east of Government Cut, a shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island on Tuesday.
A K-9 team was brought on board the boat once it was brought to the dock, which pointed agents to multiple locations within the vessel.
