A Jacksonville mother and her children, ages 10 and 6, lost their home at the Desert Winds apartment complex off Atlantic Boulevard to a fire started from a plug in an electrical outlet. Their apartment was immediately condemned.

Sequenya “Queen” Akins talked about how the situation made her feel while fighting back tears.

“I’m angry, mad, because I feel less of a mom,” Akins said. “I don’t have my kids a roof over their heads, I don’t have a decent place for my kids today, that’s what I’m supposed to do, provide for them.”

While the Red Cross provided initial emergency assistance with food and one night of temporary shelter, Akins and her children have been forced to sleep in their car since Wednesday. Akins said she has limited family support in the Jacksonville area and has serious h
