London police should have medical professionals working in its detention unit to monitor prisoners, provide medical treatment and decide whether inmates need to go to hospital, a coroner’s inquest jury says.
That was one of 10 recommendations the jury made following the completion of the inquest into the Nov. 13, 2019, death of Amanda Bolt, 28, who died in hospital 10 days after she was found unresponsive in London police cells.
Bolt, a fentanyl user with extensive health issues, was held in custody at the police station after she was arrested for a second time on Nov. 2, 2019.
She asked to be taken to hospital to get her medication, but Sgt. Kevin Lui, the officer in charge of the detention unit, decided to send an officer to pick up her medication from a pharmacy the next day.
