The increased number of shootings in London this year over last is a result of homegrown gang activity, London’s police chief says.
Chief Thai Truong made his annual presentation to city council Tuesday, following on a commitment made after the city granted police a historic four-year, $672-million budget – an average of $168 million annually. His presentation mainly highlighted positive statistics and undertakings including more community engagement, faster response times, and updates on the open air drug strategy.
But Truong also acknowledged the number of shootings in the city is moving in the wrong direction, including six shootings in 72 hours during the weekend, bringing the year-to-date total to 29, a record-high for one year in London and more than double the 14 last year.
