BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (WLOX) - The Southern Rail Commission met Friday to review what officials are calling one of the most successful rail launches in Amtrak history.
Since opening in August, the Mardi Gras Service has exceeded ridership projections and is reshaping how travelers move along the Gulf Coast. The route is driving tourism, boosting local economies, and setting the stage for expansion.
In four months, the service has carried 46,000 riders, averaging 458 passengers per day. Amtrak reports a 96% customer satisfaction rating.
“I think the most important highlight today is the overwhelming success of the service and that it’s carrying more than double the initial projection of the train,” said Knox Ross, the chairman for The Southern Rail Commission.
