On Dec. 6, 2023, the unthinkable happened. A gunman entered a building on the UNLV campus and opened fire in a place that so many students, faculty and staff consider home. An institution devoted to learning, discovery and safety was suddenly overtaken by fear and chaos.

This heinous act is the deadliest campus shooting in our state’s history and one of the deadliest ever on a U.S. university campus. Across the Nevada System of Higher Education, we felt profound heartbreak and disbelief. We lost three beloved faculty members — teachers, mentors and colleagues whose absence is and will continue to be deeply felt for years to come.
