President Donald Trump expressed his anger after Democratic candidates and initiatives scored sweeping election victories nationwide.
Trump responded to the widespread GOP defeats in high-profile races during a breakfast with Republican senators on Wednesday, Nov. 5. His comments came hours after massive Democratic victories in highly contested contests in New York City, New Jersey, and Virginia.
In a rare admission of defeat, Trump said it was a bad night for his party.
"I don't think it was good for Republicans," he said. "I don't think it was good. I'm not sure it was good for anybody."
Trump blamed the losses on the ongoing federal government shutdown, which became the longest in US history on November 5. He once again urged GOP senators to end the filibuster, which would allow Republicans to pass a stopgap bill to fund the government with 50 votes instead of 60.
Repeating his false election-rigging claims, Trump also called on the senators to pass laws requiring voter identification and banning mail-in voting.
"We should pass all the things that we want to pass to make our elections secure and safe," he said.
On Election Night, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social several times, arguing that the poor Republican performances happened because he wasn't running.
"'TRUMP WASN'T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,' according to Pollsters," Trump wrote without citing any specific polls.
New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani directly addressed Trump in his victory speech. According to unofficial results, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing in the Democratic primary and earned a last-minute endorsement from Trump.
Mamdani, 34, said he'll respond to the "oligarchy and authoritarianism" of Trump's second term.
"If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him," said Mamdani. "If there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power."
The Queens assemblyman focused his campaign on making New York City more affordable. His platform includes freezing rent prices, increasing taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers, operating fare-free buses, opening city-owned grocery stores in underserved areas, and building affordable housing.
Mamdani has also said he'll stand up to Trump's threats of increasing Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids and cutting the city's federal funding.
"This is not only how we stop Trump; it's how we stop the next one," Mamdani continued in his speech. "So, Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up."
After Mamdani's speech, Trump responded to the democratic socialist, whom he has falsely called a "communist."
"…AND SO IT BEGINS!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump also loomed over New Jersey's race to replace term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy.
According to unofficial results, Rep. Mikie Sherrill will become the Garden State's next governor after the North Jersey Congresswoman defeated Jack Ciattarelli. Jersey Democrats reversed the gains Republicans made during Trump's 2024 race, flipping up to five counties back to blue.
While no candidate was on the ballot for California's Proposition 50, The New York Times reports that voters overwhelmingly passed the measure to redistrict the Golden State. Prop 50 aims to counter Trump's efforts to gerrymander Republican-led states like Texas, potentially giving California five more members in the House of Representatives.
In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger is set to become the first female governor of the state with many federal workers missing paychecks during the government shutdown. Unofficial results have the former Congresswoman defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
Democrat Ghazala Hashmi is projected to win Virginia's lieutenant governor's race. She'll become the state's first Indian American and first Muslim to hold statewide office.
Despite a scandal around violent text messages he sent about Virginia's Republican House Speaker in 2022, Jay Jones is expected to become the state's next attorney general after defeating GOP incumbent Jason Miyares.
