As the 2025 holiday season begins, cities across the globe are embracing the festive spirit with special train exhibits and rides. From model trains to decorated subways, these celebrations are lighting up the season. In New York City, the "Holiday Train Show" at the New York Botanical Garden has been a favorite for over 30 years. This exhibit features model trains that navigate through miniature replicas of iconic New York landmarks. Visitors can enjoy nearly 200 botanical displays at the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory in the Bronx. The New York City Transit Museum, located in historic Grand Central Terminal, is also hosting a holiday train show. This event highlights various model Lionel trains, including versions of the Polar Express and vintage New York City subway sets. A miniature Grand Central Terminal serves as the departure point for the model trains, which travel through representations of famous city landmarks. Additionally, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, in partnership with the New York City Transit Museum, continues its annual tradition of Nostalgia Rides. Vintage trains from the 1930s will operate throughout December, allowing families to ride for the price of a subway fare. The vintage train will run on the F and Q lines between 96th Street-2nd Avenue and 2nd Avenue-Houston Street every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Commuter lines, including the Metro North Railroad and Long Island Railroad, are also participating by decorating their trains with holiday lights through early January. In Chicago, the CTA is celebrating the 34th year of its Holiday Train and Holiday Bus. The Allstate CTA Holiday Train consists of six passenger rail cars adorned with lights and ornaments, along with a flatcar carrying a sleigh with Santa. This festive train runs on all eight subway routes, bringing holiday cheer to thousands of riders. The Holiday Bus, also decorated with lights, plays holiday music and features images of Chicago landmarks, including the Bean and Buckingham Fountain. It will operate on multiple routes through late December for the cost of a regular bus fare. On the West Coast, the Napa Valley Wine Train offers the Santa Train Jolly Journeys, a two-hour family experience showcasing the scenic Napa Valley. In Canada, the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train travels through the mountains, featuring two decorated freight trains that make stops across the U.S. and Canada, from New Brunswick to British Columbia and from North Dakota to Texas. Internationally, the Santa Steam Express in London provides a 90-minute journey on a vintage steam engine. Passengers enjoy warm drinks, gifts, and picturesque views of West London during this festive ride.
