Sahaja Reddy Udumala, a 24-year-old Indian student pursuing her Master’s degree in Albany, New York, has tragically died after suffering severe injuries in a house fire. The incident occurred on December 4, when the Albany Police and Fire Departments responded to a blaze that engulfed the residence. Upon arrival, they discovered several individuals trapped inside. Four adults were rescued and treated for serious injuries, with two later transferred to a specialized burn centre.
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed its sorrow over Udumala's untimely demise, stating, "Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences to her family during this difficult time." The Consulate is currently in contact with Udumala’s family to provide assistance.
Udumala's cousin, Rathna Gopu, revealed that she suffered burns on nearly 90% of her body. Gopu described her as a "bright and hardworking student" who fought valiantly for her life but ultimately succumbed to complete organ failure despite medical efforts. Gopu has initiated a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses, repatriation of Udumala’s remains, and support for her family, which has raised over USD 112,000 of its USD 120,000 goal. The family is facing unexpected emotional and financial challenges following this devastating loss.
