Two individuals have been arrested following the theft of a singing nutcracker statue from outside a funeral home in Sheerness, Kent. The 5ft figure, which was a source of joy for local children, was taken from Luke Allum Funeral Directors on Thursday afternoon. Owner Luke Allum explained that the nutcracker was placed outside the business around 3pm to entertain children on their way home from school. He stated, "We always try to do things for the town at this time of year with our Tree of Remembrance to honour loved ones and a remembrance post box for children to post Christmas letters and cards to loved ones in heaven. This year we decided to get a big nutcracker outside that sings to kids. We put it on at about 3pm so it sings on their way home from school. They literally love it, it sings to them, they take pictures with it." However, while Mr Allum and his staff were attending a funeral, the nutcracker was stolen from the porch. Expressing his confusion over the incident, he remarked, "You think why have you stolen a nutcracker, out of everything?" After reporting the theft to the police, Mr Allum took to social media, where he received an outpouring of support from the community, many expressing their dismay at the news. He emphasised that he is not seeking financial compensation but simply wishes to have the nutcracker returned, stating, "We bought that in September, trying to get a nutcracker now is impossible." Kent Police have confirmed the arrest of two men, aged 59 and 39, in connection with the theft. A police spokesperson noted that the statue, valued at £250, was intended to make visits to the funeral home more welcoming for bereaved families.
