Emergency services responded to a serious crash on the A19 near Holystone, which occurred on Friday night. A woman in her 30s was driving a Volkswagen T-roc when she collided with a Skoda Fabia while overtaking a stationary vehicle. The incident took place around 10.40pm, and the driver of the Skoda did not stop at the scene. The woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she remained in a critical condition on Saturday. Following the incident, Northumbria Police arrested two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Both suspects are currently in police custody. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police stated, "A section of the road remains closed northbound to allow officers to carry out enquiries." The roads policing team has launched an investigation and is appealing for witnesses, particularly those with dashcam footage from the time of the collision. Motorists faced significant disruption as the A19 was closed for over 12 hours in both directions, leading to traffic chaos on Saturday morning. The southbound carriageway reopened around 11.30am. The North East Ambulance Service reported that they dispatched multiple resources to the scene, including four double-crewed ambulances and a specialist paramedic team. Two patients were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Northumbria Police via social media, the live chat function on their website, or by calling 101, quoting reference number NP-20251205-1124.
