CHARLESTON – Martinsburg found a different gear in the second half of Friday’s Class AAAA state football championship game against Morgantown.
Down three scores in the third quarter, the third-seeded Bulldogs rallied back to within a touchdown with a few minutes remaining in the game and had a promising drive going as time wound down that would have tied the game.
Unfortunately for Martinsburg, the would-be tying drive stalled, and the Bulldogs fell short in a 28-21 loss to the top-seeded Mohigans, who won their first state football title since 2005.
"Our kids have worked so hard and put some effort time and effort in. Our students, our fans, our cheerleaders, the whole school. Morgantown High School is fantastic, so it means a ton," Morgantown coach Sean Biser said.
