A speeding driver from DC who killed a 23-year-old man on a Maryland highway will spend years behind bars, federal authorities announced.
Jordan Johnson, 28, was sentenced on Friday to 30 months in federal prison in connection with a fatal car crash on the Clara Barton Parkway in Montgomery County in 2022.
According to prosecutors, around 4:45 a.m. on March 20, 2022, Johnson was driving on the parkway when he struck two vehicles that were in the roadway — both of which had been involved in an earlier accident.
One victim from the original crash was killed on impact when struck by Johnson's vehicle, investigators said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the crash, Johnson and a female passenger walked away from the scene toward DC, where Johnson lived at the time.
Police responded to the scene of the collision, and a BOLO for the two was issued to local law enforcement agencies, who tracked them down approximately a half mile away from the crash.
Johnson’s passenger told investigators that as she and Johnson walked away from the crash site, she saw the victim on the ground, bleeding.
Johnson later told police that they left the scene because he knew authorities would identify him from the paperwork associated with the apartment complex, from which he had borrowed the car.
The investigation by the US Park Police painted a more damning picture.
It was determined that Johnson was speeding between 95 and 99 mph in the five seconds before the crash — in a 35 mph zone.
"As a result of the speed he was driving, Johnson was unable to observe and perceive the vehicles stopped ahead," prosecutors said. "Additionally, Johnson drove recklessly during the entirety of his recorded trip, spanning approximately 40 minutes prior to this crash."
The crash reconstructionist concluded that Johnson’s high rate of speed was a "major contributing factor to the crash."
In addition to his prison term, a judge ordered Johnson to serve three years of supervised release. He will also pay $12,000 in restitution to the family.
