A driver survived after their car was hit by a train in Maryland early Friday, according to firefighters who rushed to the scene.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue crews responded to the crash at Oakmont Avenue and Railroad Street in Gaithersburg, where a train struck a car but somehow didn’t end the way anyone feared.

Fire officials said the occupant was “out and safe” when firefighters arrived, and crews stayed on scene to check for hazards and secure the crossing.

They also used the moment to remind drivers—firmly—that trains don’t play games.

“Always stop, look, and listen at railroad crossings,” officials said. “Never try to beat a train—it’s not worth the risk.”

Anyone who’s ever watched a train roll past knows exactly what they mean: those things do not stop quickly, and they do not swerve.
