Detroit ― Western Michigan rode the "grit" theme all season, admittedly borrowing it from the Detroit Lions.

And on Saturday afternoon, the Broncos pushed and shoved their way to just the program's fourth Mid-American Conference championship, racing past Miami, 23-13, before a crowd of 19,114 at the home of those Lions, Ford Field.

It was Western Michigan's first MAC championship since 2016, and just the program's second win in the MAC championship game, first held in 1997 and played at Ford Field since 2004. WMU also won titles in 1966 and 1988.
