New Statistics Canada figures show just how much grocery prices have risen in the past year. Are they expected to climb more in 2026?

Statistics Canada has a “basket total” that illustrates how much a person would spend if they bought each of the more than 100 items listed on it. That includes typical purchases such as meats, vegetables, milk and baked goods.

In a just-released update on its total cost, the national agency says it works out to $664.09, up from $630.49 on year prior. That covers the 12-mont period that ended in October and it works out to an average price jump of five per cent on food items.

The increases were led by products like beef and coffee.
