CHESTER, S.C. (WBTV) - One Chester man, John Massey, has been working to raise awareness about a historic African American cemetery -- Mount Hebron Cemetery.

He has shared how the cemetery has been overgrown with brush for years and needs continuous maintenance.

Mount Hebron Cemetery has been in Chester since the mid-1800s. It has been forgotten for some time. Now, Chester City Council voted to move forward and take on the maintenance at Mount Hebron Cemetery at its last council meeting.

Earlier this year, WBTV reached out to the city of Chester and to Chester County about who has responsibility of the historic cemetery. Then, both governments didn’t claim the property.
