The College Football Playoff committee announced the 12 teams that will compete for a national championship. The selection has drawn criticism, particularly from former Alabama head coach Nick Saban , a seven-time national champion.
The committee was tasked with choosing between Alabama, Miami and Notre Dame to occupy two of the at-large spots. Alabama was selected as the 9th seed and Miami as the 10th seed. Miami’s head-to-head win over Notre Dame was a key factor. Tulane and James Madison occupied the 11th and 12th spots. This was due to playoff rules that grant automatic bids to the top five conference champions.
