Kozhikode: In a state where many teashops carry boards warning customers “Ivide rashtreeyam parayaruthu” (No political discussions here), one small roadside shop in Kozhikode is witnessing the opposite. From behind a counter stacked with banana and onion fritters, Shameema Muhsin is taking politics straight to the people—while serving them hot tea.

Shameema, who runs a one-room teashop near the Kinasseri North Mosque with her husband, is now the UDF candidate for the 33rd ward (Pokkunnu) of the Kozhikode Corporation. Politics begins for her much before sunrise. By 6 am, she is already in the shop, preparing snacks and pouring endless glasses of steaming tea for the morning rush.
