A man died Saturday while helping to keep his 7-year-old son alive after their kayak capsized during a trip to a Riverside County lake, according to California State Parks.

Peace officers with California State Parks received reports of screaming and people in distress in the water near Moreno Beach at Lake Perris State Recreation Area. There, the father and the son were struggling after their kayak capsized.

Officials arrived at the scene on a patrol vessel and recovered the man, who was described as “unconscious and partially submerged.” The child was on the kayak and conscious, holding his father.
