Winter holiday road trips are a rite of passage for many, with long drives to see friends and family the setting for childhood memories.
But those trips can be draining for drivers, who might adopt aggressive schedules to save on lodging costs. Colorado is one of the worst states for drowsy driving deaths by at least one measure, and finding a place to rest safely can be critical to staying safe.
But can you actually find a place to catch a nap if you need one? The number of rest stops is dwindling in Colorado. Faced with significant capital costs for repairs, upgrades, making facilities ADA compliant and safer, the state has closed around a dozen since 2007. Some of the closings are temporary, although a CDOT study reportedly recommended more in the future.
