Here is the controversy with BYU’s bowl game opponent, as Notre Dame withdraws from postseason

The drama around BYU’s postseason didn’t end with its failed quest for the College Football Playoff .

The No. 12 Cougars were solidly out of the playoff field by Sunday morning. And it appeared BYU was heading to Orlando to play Notre Dame in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Instead, the Fighting Irish opted out of a bowl game altogether. After missing the playoffs, Notre Dame announced it wasn’t worth it to keep playing.

“We’re hoping to bring the 12th national title to South Bend in 2026,” the athletic department wrote in a statement.

BYU will instead play No. 22 Georgia Tech at Camping World Stadium. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. MT on Dec. 27

BYU finished the season 11-2 with a loss in the Big 12 title game.
