GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. —

The Colonel Robert Anderson Chapter of the South Carolina Sons of the American Revolution hosted a commemoration Saturday at Historic Hopkins Farm to mark the 250th anniversary of the Battle of the Great Cane Brake.

The battle was the only Revolutionary War battle fought on Greenville County soil, and took place on Dec. 22, 1975, on the banks of the Reedy River.

For living historians like Jeffery Bruton, who is also a member of the Colonel Robert Anderson Chapter of the South Carolina SAR, the history of the battle goes beyond the location itself.

"I have a descendant that fought in the battle of Cane Brake, his name was Private Flood Mitchell," said Bruton.
