Almost eight and a half years later, Dileep has been acquitted in the case pertaining to a popular actor who was sexually assaulted in a moving car in Kochi in 2017. The assault case shook the Malayalam film industry and exposed its power dynamics.

The case witnessed several twists and turns: multiple arrests, witnesses turning hostile and petitions over requests to change judges, among others.

The 2017 assault

On February 17, 2017 , a popular Malayalam actor was abducted by six men when she was travelling from her Thrissur home to a film event in Kochi. She was molested, assaulted and filmed in a moving car by six men. Two hours after the assault, she went to actor-director Lal's house, who insisted that she file a case.
