Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, December 8, said that India's national song 'Vande Mataram' gave power and inspiration to the people during India's freedom struggle against the British colonial rule.

Starting the discussions on 150 years of Vande Mataram in Lok Sabha, PM Modi also outlined that when the song turned 50, India was still under the colonial rule, and when it turned 100 years, the country was under emergency.

"When Vande Mataram completed 50 years, country was under colonial rule and at its 100th anniversary the nation was under Emergency," PM Modi said.

"We are sitting here because lakhs chanted Vande Mataram and fought for Independence. Remembering sacred Vande Mataram today is a great privilege for all of us in this House," he added.
