Residents across Bergen and Rockland counties looked up Sunday afternoon, Dec. 7, after hearing and seeing fighter jets move across the sky.
Many reported spotting two small planes that seemed to be escorting a larger plane.
The formation was actually connected to a planned flyover at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. A photo by Monsey Scoop shows the same lineup of aircraft passing above the stadium during the event.
What added to the confusion is that fighter jet flyovers are usually announced in advance by local officials and airports, a practice that began in 2018, after jets once flew over Bergen County without warning and frightened residents.
This time, the only public notice came from the Township of Washington Fire Department, which shared that two F-18s would be flying over MetLife Stadium around 1 p.m. as part of the Jets’ Salute to Service event.
A flight path of the jets shows that the jets circled over Paterson up near Lincoln Park, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood, Allendale, Ramsey, Pompton Lakes, Pompton Plains, Lincoln Park, Wayne, and more, on Sunday.
The Jets lost 34-10 to the Miami Dolphins.
