Mezuzahs, or Jewish prayer scrolls, have allegedly been “torn off” the doorways of units in a senior supportive housing location in North York, according to a city councillor.
Toronto police said they received “multiple reports” on Sunday of mezuzahs being taken from the doors of units within a building. It’s unclear whether the mezuzahs were all taken on the same day or over several days.
The 32 Division and Hate Crime Unit are investigating the incident, police said.
James Pasternak, a city councillor for Ward 6, said “all” of the mezuzahs had been taken from 6250 Bathurst St. , or the West Don Apartments, where the city runs supportive housing .
