PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A person has died after Portsmouth police said they jumped off of the Berkley Bridge following a car chase Monday.
Portsmouth police said at around 6:30 a.m., they identified a stolen vehicle traveling east on Route 164, heading toward I-264. Police attempted to deploy a GPS device, but it was unsuccessful.
Police continued to follow the vehicle, but it crashed at the Waterside Drive exit on the Berkley Bridge. According to police, the driver fled on foot and jumped off the bridge into the water.
Portsmouth police said that despite immediate search efforts, including divers, the suspect's body was eventually located. Police are now working to identify the person.
