LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer named an acting commissioner for the Michigan Lottery Dec. 8 after Suzanna Shkreli resigned to run for Michigan secretary of state.

Whitmer named Joe Froehlich, who has held several top positions at the lottery, as acting commissioner.

The governor said Shkreli, 38, of Birmingham, who was appointed March 1, 2024, resigned "to pursue other opportunities." A short time later, Shkreli announced she is joining the Democratic race for secretary of state, seeking to replace Democrat Jocelyn Benson, who is term-limited and running for governor.

"There's so much on the line," Shkreli told the Detroit Free Press in a Dec. 8 phone interview. Citing a rise in extremism and threats to voting rights, "I really, truly believe our democracy is at stake," she said.
