LEWISTON, Maine — "A Christmas Carol" at The Public Theatre in Lewiston is sure to help get you into the holiday spirit.

The Christmas classic was written in 1843 by Charles Dickens but was adapted by The Public Theatre's Christopher Schario, who was the longtime executive artistic director before he retired in 2024.

The theater has been putting on the hourlong version of the show for more than two decades, and many members of the cast have been in the show before.

The storyline and characters are the same, but the cast says the adapted version gets right to the heart of the story.

"I think there's a lot of darkness in the world right now, and this story is about bringing light to this individual man, and it's a way we can all bring light to ourselves," actor Sheila Stasack said.
