DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Following an investigation, the state Department of Agriculture has fined the Duplin County Animal Shelter for multiple violations.

According to a news release, the Animal Welfare Society received several complaints on Nov. 10 of suspected violations against the shelter.

On Nov. 12, a former employee alleged animal abuse and improper euthanization procedures to WITN after being fired.

State inspectors visited the shelter Nov. 17 as part of an investigation.

During their visit, inspectors say they checked an enclosure containing two kittens and found a dry water bowl. They say one kitten was found dead, and the other, which was then provided with water, drank for three consecutive minutes.
