The state Department of Health said it continues to strongly recommend hepatitis B vaccinations for newborns.

This comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended delaying the initial dose for babies whose mothers tested negative for hepatitis B.

The New Mexico Department of Health said its recommendation aligns with the many professional health organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The CDC recommended universal infant hepatitis B vaccination in 1991 prior to the recent change in recommendation.
