Penn State’s new head football coach starts out in the Top 20 in one very nichey ranking — the nation’s highest-paid college football coaches.

According to a benchmarking report presented to Penn State trustees Monday morning, Matt Campbell’s contract makes him the 15th-highest paid coach among among Penn State’s public university peers.

Campbell ranks sixth within the Big Ten Conference, trailing Ohio State, University of Southern California, Nebraska, Indiana and Oregon. He lands ahead of the University of Illinois’ Bret Bielema.

The dollar value attributed to Campbell’s compensation package, according to sources familiar with the benchmarking report, is $9.8 million.

It was not immediately clear what that figure was based on, and the report was not shared during the public portion
