The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is warning veterans, surviving spouses and beneficiaries to be on high alert after reports of a widespread scam posing as legitimate overpayment notices.
The fraudulent messages claim the recipient was “overpaid” in VA benefits and demand immediate repayment — often using pressure tactics, fake logos, or threats.
“They pretend to be official VA representatives and use official communication channels to demand repayment for alleged benefits overpayments,” the agency said of the scammers .
“Fraudulent letters, emails and texts often include fake VA letterheads and logos, making it difficult to distinguish genuine VA communications from scams.”
