LETTS, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa Parrot Rescue has raised more than $12,000 to help care for its feathered residents as costs continue to rise.

The nonprofit asked the community for donations after facing its highest operating costs in nearly 30 years. Each bird costs about $100 per month to care for, totaling $6,000 in monthly expenses.

One of the rising costs the rescue is facing is bird feed.

“I don’t know why it’s increased so much. But it’s gotten to the point where I’m not sure that we can feed that diet anymore even though our birds need it,” Sarah Kedlac, the rescue’s manager said.

The rescue also faces rising operational costs beyond food, including veterinary care and facility maintenance.
