MILWAUKEE — Two players come to mind when Rick Pitino thinks of the platonic ideal of a college basketball player — one possessing qualities of leadership, work ethic, selflessness and the understanding of why you play.
The first is Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan, who led the sixth-seeded Providence Friars to the Final Four in 1987 as a point guard under Pitino. The second is Detroit Pistons two-way guard Daniss Jenkins, who seemingly has come out of nowhere as one of the team’s top contributors during their red-hot 17-4 start.
