CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metropolitan School District Board of Education has unanimously approved a plan that will close, merge, or redesign dozens of schools in the city.
The board signed off on the plan with a 9-0 vote just under three hours into their meeting at Max S. Hayes High School Tuesday night. The plan will dramatically reshape how the district operates, with officials saying it is aimed at addressing longstanding challenges tied to enrollment and budget pressures.
The proposal is part of the district’s Building Brighter Futures initiative, and it will result in the closing or merging of 29 schools as CMSD continues to navigate sharp enrollment declines and increasing financial pressure.
