Opposition MPs on Tuesday submitted an impeachment notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla against Madras High Court Justice GR Swaminathan, saying that the judge’s recent orders and actions have been viewed as “disruptive to social harmony and detrimental to integrity of the judiciary”.
The motion seeks the removal of Swaminathan, a judge in the Madurai bench of the High Court, under Article 217 of the Constitution read with Article 124, Live Law reported.
While Article 217 pertains to the appointment and conditions of office for High Court judges, Article 124 prescribes, among other aspects, the removal process for judges.
