The A66 has been closed in both directions to high-sided vehicles between the A1(M) at Scotch Corner and the M6 at Penrith.
National Highways confirmed the restrictions on Tuesday (December 9) as gusts widely reached 50–60mph, with even stronger winds expected across exposed routes in County Durham and Cumbria, according to National Highways.
Drivers of other vehicles are being warned to expect delays and to avoid the route if possible.
