A winter storm watch has been issued across southeast South Dakota with a mix of rain, snow and wind gusts of up to 60 mph expected to arrive in the region Dec. 9.
The strong winds have the potential to create blizzard conditions later in the day and overnight by blowing and drifting the existing snowpack across the region, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
"These winds will lead to extreme difficulty in travel due to the impact of the wind, but also the potential for widespread blowing and drifting snow," the weather service said in a social media post .
