The U.S. Supreme Court will not take up a religious freedom case sought by the owner of Bakersfield bakery Tastries.
That means California’s victory over Tastries owner Cathy Miller will stand.
The backstory: Miller filed a petition to the Supreme Court to reverse a state appellate court decision earlier this year. • In 2017, Miller refused to sell a cake to a lesbian couple for their wedding in 2017. She referred them to another bakery. • The California Civil Rights Department filed a lawsuit against Tastries in 2018, and four years later a Kern County judge ruled in favor of Tastries. That decision was overturned early this year by the Fifth District Court of Appeals.
